Last updated on Jan 03, 2026

Stuck aerators are very common! Over time, limescale and sediments can build up on your aerator making it difficult to remove.

Here's our step-by-step troubleshooting process. We recommend starting with method 1 and working your way through the methods if your aerator is still stuck.

Method 1: Scrub Away Buildup

  • Use an old toothbrush dipped in hot, soapy water

  • Scrub around the aerator edges to loosen limescale/mineral buildup

  • Try the aerator removal key again

Method 2: Vinegar Soak

  • Mix vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio in a plastic bag

  • Secure bag around faucet tip with rubber band

  • Soak 12-48 hours (change solution at 24-hour mark)

Method 3: Citric Acid / Descaler Solution

For citric acid

  • Mix ½ tsp citric acid and ¾ cup of water in a plastic bag

  • Secure bag around faucet tip with rubber band

  • Soak 12-48 hours (change solution at 24-hour mark)

For coffee maker descaler

  • Follow instructions of bottle

Method 4: Lubricant / WD-40

  • Spray around aerator edges, wait 15 minutes

Method 5: CLR / Acidic Cleaner

  • Use calcium/lime removal product as directed

  • Use an old toothbrush dipped in hot, soapy water to scrub

⚠️Test on inconspicuous area first—may affect faucet finish. Not recommended for painted plastic faucets. Clean thoroughly afterward to remove all residue.
